4-star Oklahoma DB Prospects Meet in Week One Matchup

In this story:
MOORE — Thursday night saw the official kickoff of the 2023 Oklahoma high school football season.
Westmoore vs Tulsa Union was one of many contests around the state on opening night, but drew the largest interest from OU fans, as it saw 2024 Sooners' defensive back commit Mykel Patterson-McDonald and the Jaguars square off against Oklahoma DB target Devon Jordan and the Redhawks.
Patterson-McDonald committed to Brent Venables and company on July 31, choosing OU over Missouri, UNLV and Houston. Last week, Jordan put the Sooners in his top five schools alongside TCU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Alabama.
Patterson-McDonald, who is childhood friends with 5-star IMG Academy defensive lineman and Oklahoma City native David Stone, is a 4-star prospect and one of the top 30 safeties in the country according to Rivals.
When asked over the summer about which game he had circled on the schedule, Patterson-McDonald immediately mentioned the Redhawks.
"Union. That Union game, it's going to be a big game," Patterson-McDonald said. "It's a few kids I know there, like Devon Jordan. It's going to be really good competition, top five kid in the state, top three. Good competition."
Unfortunately for Patterson-McDonald and the Jaguars, however, the Redhawks took an early lead on Thursday night and would not look back. With solid nights offensively from Union standouts Brendon McQueen, Jordan Schelling and Shaker Reisig, the visiting team was able to overwhelm Westmoore 49-7.
After an early touchdown run from Schelling, a junior running back, the Redhawks added two more touchdowns in the the second quarter.
Behind 21-0, the Jaguars put Patterson-McDonald in on offense and scored on the ensuring possession. Following Westmoore's lone score, the Jaguars forced a punt and had begun to claw themselves back into the game.
After a special teams mishap by Westmoore, Union took over inside their own 10 yard-line and scored easily, draining any momentum that the Jaguars had started to build.
While neither Jordan, nor Patterson-McDonald made any highlight plays, both players recorded multiple tackles and was a source of energy and leadership for their squad.
Jordan, who is one of the top 30 cornerbacks in the country according to 247Sports, was wearing OU gloves during the contest, and said afterwards that Oklahoma constantly "shows love".
If Venables and company are able to earn a commitment from Jordan, it would be a huge head-to-head win on the recruiting trail over two conference opponents. Additionally, the 4-star corner from Union would bolster a defensive back group that already boasts Patterson-McDonald as well as fellow 4-star prospects Jaydan Hardy, Jeremiah Newcombe and Eli Bowen.
