Oklahoma Adds Local Tight End Out of the Transfer Portal

Joe Jon Finley added his second tight end via the transfer portal as he works to rebuild depth at the position for 2024.

Oklahoma’s tight end room is taking shape for next year.

The Sooners on Monday night picked up a commitment from former Baylor tight end Jake Roberts, adding to transfer Bauer Sharp and 2024 signee Davon Mitchell.

Roberts, a former star at Norman North High School and the older brother of class of 2025 4-start tight end Nate Roberts, played for Seth Littrell at North Texas for three years and enjoyed a career year for the Mean Green in 2022.

He hauled in 28 passes for 394 yards and three touchdowns, and followed up that output with 23 catches for 231 yards and a touchdown this past year in Waco.

In total, Roberts caught 66 passes for 772 yards and four scores across four seasons at Baylor and North Texas.

Injuries hampered the development of Joe Jon Finley’s tight end room last year.

After landing Austin Stogner, who returned from South Carolina, Jason Llewellyn and Kaden Helms both missed crucial time in spring practice due to injuries.

Helms’ entire 2023 campaign was lost due to the injury, and Llewellyn transferred to Texas Tech after the season.

OU also lost Blake Smith to the portal after spending just one year backing up Stogner.

Roberts will bring key experience to the position as Mitchell, who reclassified to enroll in Norman a year early, gets acclimated to life in college football and the SEC.
