Oklahoma Loses Commitment from 5-star Running Back, per Report

In this story:
After weeks and weeks of recruiting success, the Sooners have suffered their first setback in a while.
Class of 2028 running back Micah Rhodes — the No. 1 running back in the class, per 247Sports — has decommitted from Oklahoma, per a report from Aaron Wilson of KPRC-TV in Houston.

A native of Spring, TX, Rhodes is a consensus top-50 recruit in the 2028 class. He is ranked as the No. 28 overall prospect and the No. 1 running back for the recruiting cycle in 247Sports’ rankings.
As a sophomore at Klein Oak High School in 2025, Rhodes rushed for 1,307 yards and 21 touchdowns on 172 carries. He was named to MaxPreps’ Sophomore All-American First Team.
Rhodes’ superb 2025 campaign followed his freshman season in which he rushed for 934 yards and 10 touchdowns on Klein Oak’s varsity squad. He was named a MaxPreps Freshman All-American that year.
With nearly two years until players from the Class of 2028 sign their national letters of intent, Rhodes committed to OU on Jan. 29 over his other two finalists, Texas A&M and Texas.
Just two weeks after Rhodes’ commitment, running backs coach DeMarco Murray departed Oklahoma in favor of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. The Sooners hired Deland McCullough, the Las Vegas Raiders’ running backs coach in 2025, as Murray’s replacement.
According to Wilson’s report, Murray’s departure was a key factor in Rhodes’ decommitment.
“His original commitment was heavily influenced by former Sooners running backs coach DeMarco Murray, now (the) Chiefs’ running backs coach,” Wilson said on X (formerly Twitter). “Rhodes is now reopening his recruitment and has multiple options with several of the top programs in the nation.”

In addition to Texas A&M and Texas, Rhodes has collected offers from Alabama, Missouri, UCLA, Texas Tech, Oregon, Notre Dame, USC and Nebraska.
Now that Rhodes is reportedly no longer committed, the Sooners have zero pledges from the Class of 2028. That isn’t alarming, though, as there are still 20 months until signing day for that class, and only seven Power Four programs have earned a commitment thus far.
Rhodes’ decommitment follows a stretch of monumental recruiting victories. The Sooners earned commitments from six 2027 players in a five-day span in early March, and they also earned a pledge from offensive lineman Isaac Coughran on Tuesday.
With 20 commits, Oklahoma’s 2027 recruiting class is ranked No. 1 nationally by 247Sports.
