Oklahoma entered the game today ranked as the AP number 5 team in the nation. They also came into the matchup against the 3-3 West Virginia Mountaineers as a 33.5 point favorite. The big expectations were no problem as the Sooners manhandled the young WVU team.

One of the big stories was Austin Kendall making his return to Norman. Kendall was a former OU QB, who sat behind the last two Heisman winners in Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield. After graduating and transferring to the Mountaineers, Kendall won the starting job.

Coming into the day, the WVU QB was completing 66% of his passes. Today, Kendall passed for 182 yards on 15-31 attempts and two touchdowns, throwing for less than his season average. The defense for the Sooners were all over the field. Cornerbacks Tre Brown and Parnell Motley played well. Austin struggled with the deep ball and also was challenged as the DB’s for OU play lock-tight coverage.

The Sooners also shut down the WVU rushing attack. Coming into the game, the Mountaineers averaged 3.1 yards per rush and less than 100 yards a game. Today was no different, with the inability to dominate the line of scrimmage, the running backs of West Virginia only tallied a 1.7 YPR average and were only able to accumulate 51 yards rushing.

The same can not be said for OU, as they ran the ball in whichever way they wanted. The combo of Hurts and Brooks helped lead the Sooners to a 5.2 YPR average and over 197 yards on the ground.

Jalen Hurts was the story on the day. Can you say hello Heisman? The former Alabama transfer had a career day, with only one incomplete pass, which was a drop. Hurts threw for 316 yards on 16-17 passes and had 3 TD’s. Jalen was also the leading rusher, carrying the ball 10 times for 75 yards and 2 more TD’s.

The special teams came up big, as well, in the Sooners 52-14 victory. The Mountaineers were forced to punt 9 times on the day and the OU special teams nearly blocked 2. The pressure finally got there as Brayden Willis blocked a punt in the third quarter that went into the endzone and was recovered by Austin Stogner for an OU TD.

OU moved to 7-0 on the year while the Mountaineers fall to 3-4. Next up for OU, is another 11AM game next week in Manhattan, Kansas against the Wildcats of Kansas State.
