In this story:

Despite questions and debate surrounding the SEC's schedule changes in anticipation of Texas and Oklahoma's arrival, commissioner Greg Sankey said the league plans on eight conference games in 2024.

It was rumored that the SEC could potentially pivot to a nine-game conference schedule, but for the first year of the new look league, things will stay the same. In addition to eight conference games, league members will be required to play an opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 or a major independent team.

With the eight game schedule, teams are set up to have one permanent opponent and seven rotating opponents — which essentially sets up a home-and-home series every four years.

Past 2024, scheduling decisions are still up in the air, and the SEC is seemingly flexible on potential changes. It looked like the nine-game schedule had momentum early on, but as the fall grows closer, this appeared to be the likely outcome — at least in year one.

In addition to Sankey's scheduling announcement, he also mentioned that the league will release each team's 2024 conference schedule on SEC Network June 14. The impending announcement will detail each team's opponents only, with no dates at this point in time.

The scheduling system certainly seems to be a short-term solution, with the league mentioning a desire to establish a long-term conference scheduling strategy in the future.

In addition to Thursday's announcements, it was clarified that divisions will disappear in 2024.
