Sooners in the NFL 2023: Week 17

Oklahoma's quarterback duel highlighted the school's NFL action in Week 17.

Outside of CeeDee Lamb, Oklahoma’s highlight in the NFL this week was certainly Sunday’s matchup between former quarterbacks Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts. It was a competitive game until the very end and both signal caller played a fantastic game. In the end, Murray’s Cardinals pulled off a massive road upset on Hurts’ Eagles 35-31.

Both quarterbacks played good enough to win, and it truly seemed like it was a duel between the two best players on the field. In a losing effort, Hurts tallied 167 passing yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-23. His lone interception came on the last play of the game, where he fired up a Hail Mary to give the Eagles a chance.

For Murray, he notched his best win of the season and did so without the help of his top target and former Oklahoma star Marquise Brown. Murray totaled 25-of-31 passing for 232 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also added five carries for 24 yards.

It wasn’t the first quarterback duel between Oklahoma signal callers this season, but it was certainly the most entertaining. Hurts and Murray were battling back and forth down the stretch all afternoon.

The 2023 NFL season has been the year of Oklahoma quarterbacks, as all three starters are taking the league by storm.

On the season, Murray now has 1,537 passing yards, 211 rushing yards, 12 total touchdowns and five interceptions in seven games.

Jalen Hurts is up to 3,803 yards, 23 passing touchdowns, 15 rushing touchdowns and 14 interceptions. The Eagles are now 11-5.

Last but not least, Baker Mayfield has still been impressive despite a loss to the Saints on Sunday. He’s up to 3,907 yards, 29 total touchdowns and 10 interceptions, and Tampa Bay has a chance to clinch the division next week.
