The Cowboys continue to add depth, even by way of a preferred walk on commitment.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys continue to add depth for their future. On Tuesday, they landed a commitment from a 2024 preferred walk-on quarterback. Now, the Cowboys already have their likely quarterback of the future in the class with Maealiuaki Smith having already signed with the program.

Still, the Cowboys are building depth and bringing more and more talent to develop in their system.

The most recent commitment to the program was Garret Wilson, a quarterback from Oklahoma Christian (Edmond). Oklahoma State gave Wilson a preferred walk-on offer on Jan. 17, just two weeks before he committed to the program.

In the 2023 season, Wilson completed 179 of his 273 pass attempts for 3,004 passing yards and 35 passing touchdowns with just two interceptions on the season. He added 463 rushing yards on 43 carries, adding an additional eight touchdowns with his feet.

With the 43 touchdowns on the season, Wilson was named Class 2A District 1 MVP. Listed at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, Wilson is going to be a talent worth developing on the practice squad and potentially even getting him on a scholarship.

For the Cowboys, Alan Bowman is playing his final season under center. He's in his seventh year of college football and second with Oklahoma State, meaning the Cowboys are going to have to go a different direction at the position in the near future anyway.

Adding Wilson to the quarterback room will add more competition and help the rest of the players in the position room continue to stay sharp and ready.

Again, Oklahoma State is a program built off of developing talent and working towards long-term goals by doing so. This benefits underrated recruits who want to end up at a Power Five program, which has been seen in years past.

In the era of Name, Image and Likeness, players joining big programs, even in a preferred walk-on role, can benefit from the situation.
