Ole Miss Has More Flexibility in the Secondary Than They Have in Years

Pete Golding, in his first offseason as the Ole Miss head coach, made sure his defense would improve from the 2025 season, a year in which the Rebels won two playoff games and came just a couple of plays away from reaching the national championship.

The Ole Miss staff hit the transfer portal hard across all three levels of the defense, including beefing up an already impressive defensive line and adding two key linebackers in Luke Ferrelli from California and Keaton Thomas from Baylor.

The secondary has been a major problem for Lane Kiffin led Ole Miss teams, as the Rebels' defensive backs were never consistently elite outside of Trey Amos, a transfer portal addition from Alabama who was coached by Golding during his time as the Crimson Tide's defensive coordinator.

Golding hit the transfer portal to find serviceable talent that can help Ole Miss overcome the stereotype that its secondary will always be lackluster.

Jay Crawford transferred from the Auburn Tigers and will likely see immediate playing time with the Rebels. Crawford shined during his two seasons at Auburn, seeing immediate playing time as a freshman. The addition of Crawford brings SEC experience to an already experienced unit.

Joenel Aguero also transferred in from an SEC school, this time the prestigious Georgia Bulldogs. Aguero brings SEC experience and elite tackling ability, an area where the Rebels have struggled at times. Aguero is a safety who excels at stopping the run while also flashing good ball skills in passing situations.

The secondary transfer portal additions will help Golding tremendously, especially because Ole Miss can rotate a ton of players to evaluate talent early on while also keeping the secondary fresh during tough SEC conference games.

Ole Miss Returns Key Secondary Players

Antonio Kite will lead the way in the Rebels' secondary heading into an important 2026 season. Kite has the potential to be the best cornerback on the entire roster and will be a popular choice as a breakout player once fall camp concludes.

Jaylon Braxton also has a chance to be a highly touted player in the Rebels' secondary, as he showed flashes during the 2025 season of becoming a potential star. Braxton has elite ball-tracking abilities and great speed, two traits that defensive backs rely on to be successful, especially in the SEC.

New head coach Pete Golding finally has flexibility at one of the hardest positions in football. The Rebels' secondary needs to be an elite unit in 2026 if Ole Miss wants to recreate the success the team had in 2025.
