There's a lot of new faces around the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex in Eugene this spring.

Whether it's the more than 25 newcomers that joined the Oregon Ducks football program for spring practice or a number of new assistants on the coaching staff, it's been an offseason full of change for Dan Lanning.

Brian Michalowski is one of the newest hires for Lanning, as he tabbed the former Oregon State defensive quality control analyst as his inside linebackers coach following Jake Long's return to Alabama.

Lanning is confident that their longstanding history of working together will help them achieve great things at Oregon.

"Brian's obviously a guy that I've worked with at a lot of different stops," the head coach said following the first spring practice in Eugene. "This is our fourth stop together. I'm very familiar with him and the way he operates. (He) Understands it."

Michalowski already has a lot on his plate. He needs to familiarize himself with the defensive scheme, his linebacker room and the recruiting philosophy that's already lead to tangible success for Lanning.

Other new assistants A'lique Terry and Mike Cavanaugh will also need to get up to speed quickly.

Early on though, Michalowksi is understanding and implementing the vision Lanning has, and it's resulted in positive return on the recruiting trail.

"He's super detailed," 2024 Oregon linebacker target Kamar Mothudi said of Michalowski in a recent interview. "Going to the meetings seeing the drills he planned for practice, the plans he printed out for the players for practice. Just wants to make sure everybody's on their assignment, understands it, is able to learn. He was awesome."

It sounds like Michalowski is attacking his job with the fire you'd want to see in a new hire. The Ducks are going to need every bit of that fire as they work to overhaul one of the more of the Pac-12's least effective defenses in 2022.

Fortunately for Oregon, Michalowksi has plenty of talent to work with at his position with players like transfers Jestin Jacobs and Connor Soelle, as well as returners Jeffrey Bassa, Keith Brown, Devin Jackson and Harrison Taggart all hungry to turn a new leaf on defense in 2023.
