The former Oregon quarterback commit de-committed from the Ducks on December 2, the day after the 2023 Pac-12 Championship. He had been committed to Oregon since May.
Shortly after reopening his recruitment, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound quarterback made his way out to Starkville for a visit with the Bulldogs and new head coach Jeff Lebby, who was recently hired away from the University of Oklahoma, where he served as Brent Venables' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Van Buren will play his college football in Starkville after wrapping up his senior season at St. Frances Academy, where the Panthers finished 5-6 in the 2023 season.
He joins a Mississippi State recruiting class that is ranked No. 36 nationally and No. 15 in the SEC, headlined by commitments from Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy offensive tackle Jimothy Lewis and Sardis (Miss.) North Panola wide receiver JJ Harrell.
The Under Armour All-American quarterback is one of two passers the Bulldogs have added this offseason after also landing a recent commitment from Baylor transfer Blake Shapen.
The Bulldogs finished the 2023 season with a 5-7 overall record, going 1-7 in SEC play.
