Over the past two days, South Carolina's Baseball program witnessed multiple players from their active roster, and 2023 recruiting class drafted into the MLB's minor league system. In terms of the 2023 roster, six players heard their names called, including pitchers like Jack Mahoney, Will Sanders, Noah Hall, James Hicks, and Cade Austin, along with shortstop Braylen Wimmer.

One name, however, that never came off the board was the Gamecocks' second baseman Will McGillis, who, while missing nearly half the season with a broken bone in one of his forearms, was the team's primary leadoff hitter when healthy and finished last season slashing .313/.469/.798 in 99 at-bats with fourteen homers and 30 RBI's. Despite that, no team was willing to take a chance on him until after the draft, when free agents could be contacted by any MLB franchises interested in picking them up.

Thankfully for McGillis, the Los Angeles Angels were interested enough in his potential that they signed him to a free-agent deal, which was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

While McGillis will likely have to fight hard to make a roster in the Angels farm system, it's good to see one of South Carolina's biggest stars of the postseason get his shot at realizing his dream of potentially one day playing in the big leagues.
