Other Notes & Observations From South Carolina's Fourth Fall Camp Practice

The pads have officially come on for Shane Beamer's South Carolina Gamecocks, and when you combine that with the scorching heat that the Palmetto State endures every Summer, it can test the mettle of even the toughest football players around. That's the epitome of Fall camp for major college football programs in the southeastern US, and the one that resides in Columbia plans to use every bit of their allotted time to find out what their lineup will look like come week one when they play the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Monday's practice was a continuation of that and involved an extremely competitive team period, fielding an entire three-deep on both sides of the ball. Things got chippy after a couple of plays, and even offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley and defensive end/outside linebackers coach Sterling Lucas got into a bit of a shouting match after a play early on during the team portion of practice, something that shouldn't be characterized as anything other than coaches being competitive.
When looking at the three-deep on each side of the ball, five players who took the field stuck out to me: Tyshawn Wannamaker, Jordan Strachan, David Spaulding, Judge Collier, and LaNorris Sellers. After not running with the ones in the Gamecocks' first practice this past Friday, Wannamaker found himself back with the first team on Monday afternoon.
Jordan Strachan was running with the ones on the defensive side of the ball, and his overall ability to move continued to look good, even with pads on, which is a good sign for the Gamecocks' defense. After being limited with some injuries over the past year or so, David Spaulding was the starting nickel corner on defense, which offers this secondary a little more positional flexibility. Judge Collier was running with the twos at outside corner, which was notable because Isaiah Norris, who ran with the third-team defense, is heading into his third season in Columbia, so this is indicative of Collier's growth since January.
Then there's LaNorris Sellers, who many have dubbed the next really good quarterback here at South Carolina. While Sellers won't be competing for the starting job and will have to fight hard to unseat Luke Doty for the backup role, it seems like he's making the case as the Gamecocks' No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart, as he strolled out there with the No. 3 offense in the team portion of practice on Monday.
