Shane Beamer Believes Positional Flexibility Could Help Offensive Line

Outside of possibly the linebacker position, no other group on South Carolina's Football team lost more experience from last season than the offensive line. Between Eric Douglas, Jovaughn Gwyn, and Dylan Wonnum all moving on, the Gamecocks are replacing 124 career starts in their offensive front. Throw in losing the injured Jaylen Nichols for likely the majority of the season at the minimum, and South Carolina's replacing 18 more starts on top of that.
When at his charity event, Birdies With Beamer, on Wednesday afternoon, Shane Beamer was asked how the staff has tried to approach figuring out the best five offensive linemen ahead of their week one matchup.
"How much time you got," Beamer humorously quipped back. "It'll be piecing it together - and when I say piecing it together, we're fortunate that we have a lot of flexibility on the offensive line - Lonnie [Teasley] and Greg [Adkins], and those guys have done a great job throughout Spring practice and the Summer of forcing our players on the offensive line to play multiple spots," Shane explained.
Having positional flexibility can be huge for an offensive line, especially if a specific player goes down or if another player's skillset fits better somewhere else compared to where they've been repping. Either way, Shane made no bones that the staff will need all hands on deck regarding the offensive line this season, meaning Fall camp will be a critical stretch for Lonnie Teasley's unit.
"We got some returners that need to continue to develop and grow and [I'm] confident those guys will - We've got some incoming freshmen that we're gonna have to play, that need to be ready to play and will be, some transfers that have come in," Beamer lamented. "It'll be a big August [where] we've gotta see where these guys are, get them better in a hurry, and just know that throughout the season, our depth is not where we need to be on the offensive line right now, but we've got a lot of position flexibility along all five spots that'll help us as the year goes on."
