When the Gamecocks lost left tackle Jaylen Nichols to a significant lower-body injury in their Spring game on April 15th, Shane Beamer and his staff recognized that they needed to get more linemen out of the portal to offer themselves more positional versatility. They first accomplished this with the commitment of Charlotte transfer tackle Jaxon Hughes on May 10th and continued on Tuesday with the commitment of Mercer guard Ni Mansell.

Mansell is reportedly coming to Columbia as a preferred walk-on and has two years of eligibility remaining heading into the 2023 season. According to Pro Football Focus, Ni started 12 games at left guard in his three seasons for the Bears and played an additional 17 games at right guard.

When looking at his stats from Pro Football Focus, what sticks out about Mansell is the consistency he's shown at being able to protect the quarterback, as Ni has posted a pass-blocking grade of 71.8 or higher in 17 career games and only allowed one sack in 412 career pass-blocking snaps. Mansell could be a great scheme fit for a South Carolina offense that might be throwing the ball a lot more this upcoming season, with stars Spencer Rattler and Antwane Wells Jr. returning for another season.
