TCU Baseball Starts off the Weekend in Houston with a Win Over Michigan

No. 10 TCU, led by an outstanding pitching performance from both Ryan Vanderhei and Luke Savage, defeat Michigan 6-0 to open the weekend at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic in Houston.

The win improved the Frogs’ record to 6-3 on the season. The Wolverines fell to 4-5.

Starting pitcher Ryan Vanderhei secured his first win on the young season, tossing six scoreless inning and striking out eight batters. He also only gave up three hits and allowed one walk. His toughest test came in the fifth inning, when he was able to escape a basses-loaded and no out jam to keep the shutout intact.

Luke Savage came on in relief in the seventh inning and ended up finishing the game to earn the save. The save was Savage’s third of his career.

It wasn’t until the fourth inning when the Frogs were able to get a run on the board. Austin Davis led off the inning with a home run into the left field Crawford Box at Minute Made Park to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead. Cole Fontenelle later added two more with a pinch-hit two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning.

The offense added more insurance runs making it a 6-0 contest and that was plenty for them to secure the win. Much less stress to end the game contrasted with the last time these two schools took the field against each other in another sport.

Looking ahead, TCU faces No. 14 Louisville at Minute Made Park Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CT.
