TCU Baseball Drops Series Opener Against #22 Texas Tech

In a 20-16 slugfest where TCU led most of the game, a nine-run seventh inning from the Red Raiders helped end the Frogs six-game winning streak Friday.

TCU Starter Ryan Vanderhei was only able to work two full innings tonight, giving up five runs on seven hits and inflating his ERA to 6.39. He was unable to record a strike out and allowed three walks. He wasn’t the only one on the field who had trouble on the mound.

TCU was not held scoreless in an inning until the eighth tonight, but that still was not enough for them to secure the victory.

The Frogs jumped out to an early 8-0 lead by the top of the second inning. Cole Fontenelle got the party going in the first inning, hitting a two-run homer. Then the Frogs rallied for six runs in the top of the second, all with two outs. Brayden Taylor hit a two-run shot to center field, then Fontenelle blasted his second home run in as many innings in the following at bat. The homer was Taylor's team-leading ninth on the year and Fontenelle is just behind him with seven.

For Texas Tech, Gavin Kash led off the bottom of the second with a solo homer, his first of two home runs on the day. The Red Raiders scored another in the second then three in the third. Hudson White homered in the bottom of the fifth before the flood gates really opened for the Frogs pitchers.

Texas Tech scored for runs in the sixth, nine in the seventh, and Kash homered again in the eighth to give the Red Raiders 20 runs in the ball game. Like the line score shows, the seventh inning was ugly. Three runners scored via a free pass with the bases loaded, and six of the eight runs were unearned.

The Frogs look to bounce back in game two Saturday as Kole Klecker gets the ball. First pitch is at 2:00 p.m. from Lubbock.
