TCU Horned Frogs Baseball Preview 2024: Outfield

Talent and experience define the 2024 TCU outfield crew. Who can you expect to see this spring?

Last year, the TCU Horned Frogs were the hunters. As a result, they exceeded many preseason projections and found themselves in the College World Series. Now, in 2024, TCU becomes the hunted. The defense expects to be strong again, anchored by an experienced group of outfielders.

Below, we'll go over the outfield for TCU baseball this season and what to expect from the unit as a whole. Check back for more positional previews, leading up to a TCU baseball season preview and prediction.

Last year, we came within six games of TCU's record, but did project a College World Series run for the Frogs.

Luke Boyers

TCU Horned Frogs left fielder Luke Boyers (6) gets an out against the Virginia Cavaliers during the eighth inning at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.

TCU Baseball: Returning Outfielders

Left and right fields will be manned by returning starters and familiar faces: junior Logan Maxwell (LF) and senior Luke Boyers (RF). The two combined for 353 plate appearances, with Maxwell being a strong contact hitter (.300 BA) and Boyers delivering a bit of power (seven home runs). Boyers saw his numbers dip slightly last season after being named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 in 2022. However, he thrived in big-time moments, delivering in the clutch multiple times.

Sophomore Jake Duer returns after seeing limited action last season. He started four games as a designated hitter and appeared in three more throughout the season. As the outfield room thins a bit with the departure of Elijah Nunez and Austin Davis, Duer has a chance to crack the lineup more regularly.

TCU Baseball: Outfield Additions

Centerfield appears to be locked down by true freshman Chase Brunson. The San Clemente, Calif., product was drafted in the 18th round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and won league MVP as a high school senior. He brings decent power at the plate – standing a healthy 6-foot-3 – and elite athleticism to both the bases and defensively.

True freshman Sam Myers joins Brunson as an incoming outfielder. Myers comes from Cypress, where he earned all-district honors twice. The accolades continue, as he was ranked No. 8 among Texas outfield prospects, according to Perfect Game. Perhaps most impressive, Myers graduated from Cypress Woods with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Jack Arthur rounds out the outfield additions. He started his college career at Texas before transferring to Weatherford College. At Weatherford, Arthur earned All-American honors and played on the JUCO World Series team. He hit 20 home runs, stole 17 bases, and bat .376 in 2023, providing an excellent depth piece in the outfield.
