North Carolina vs. TCU Prediction, Odds and Key Players to Watch for College Football Week 0

Week 0 of the 2026 College Football season begins in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday as the North Carolina Tar Heels take on the TCU Horned Frogs at 12 p.m. EST.

Year 2 of the Bill Belichick era in Chapel Hill isn’t expected to get off to a great start, as oddsmakers have set the Tar Heels as 7.5-point underdogs in this neutral site matchup.

TCU closed out the 2025 season with three straight wins, completing a 9-4 season with a win in the Alamo Bowl against USC. However, the Horned Frogs have a new quarterback after Josh Hoover transferred to the Indiana Hoosiers.

Now, former Harvard star Jaden Craig is taking over at quarterback for TCU, which is hoping to be in the mix to win the Big 12 this season.

North Carolina has a new quarterback as well after Billy Edwards Jr. won a four-man competition this summer. Can he help Belichick turn this program around after a dismal 4-8 showing in 2025?

North Carolina vs. TCU Key Player to Watch

Jaden Craig, Quarterback, TCU

Jaden Craig has some big shoes to fill for TCU in the 2026 season, but the former Harvard star has quite the resume at the collegiate level. Craig threw for over 6,000 yards 52 touchdowns and just 12 picks in three years at Harvard (two where he was the full-time starter). He combined for 28 touchdowns (25 through the air, three on the ground) in the 2025 season, and he should fit in nicely with a TCU team that was inside the top-40 in the country in EPA/Play on offense last season.

Craig can make big plays happen, as he was third in the FCS in big-time throw rate last season at Harvard (8.6 percent). Oddsmakers clearly believe in the team around Craig as well with the Horned Frogs coming into this matchup as 7.5-point favorites.

North Carolina vs. TCU Prediction and Pick

Even with the yearly turnover from roster-to-roster in college football, I am very skeptical of this UNC team that didn’t have a clear-cut option at quarterback going into the summer.

Edwards has appeared in just 28 games in his collegiate career, playing just two at Wisconsin in 2025. He’s completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 3,435 yards, 19 scores and 10 picks in those 28 games. 2024 was the only year Edwards was a starter, and that’s a concern for a UNC team that struggled mightily in the ACC in 2025.

Belichick has yet to show that he can recruit and coach at a high level in college, and TCU returns some key players from last year’s offense in Jeremy Payne and Jordan Dwyer.

In 2025, UNC had a net EPA/Play of minus-0.03, sitting in 99th in the country in EPA/Play on offense.

Unless Edwards has turned himself into a totally different quarterback, I have a hard time seeing this team flipping that in Week 1 against a quality opponent. TCU may not be a ranked team entering 2026, but I do think it can win this game by a touchdown or more, especially after it beat UNC by 34 in 2025.
