2026 Big 12 Power Rankings: Who Rules College Football's Most Chaotic Conference?

The Big 12 has spent the last two seasons cementing its reputation as the most unpredictable league in college football, and 2026 looks like more of the same. Four different programs have reached the conference championship game in Arlington since the league expanded to 16 teams, and six different schools have won the title since 2020. As the season kicks off, here's where the 16 teams stack up.

Big 12 Power Rankings Entering Week Zero

1. Texas Tech Red Raiders

The reigning Big 12 champions return as the clear favorite after a dominant 2025 campaign that saw them win eight of nine conference games by multiple scores and reach the College Football Playoff behind one of the best defenses in conference history. The Red Raiders enter the year with their highest preseason AP ranking since 1977.

2. BYU Cougars

Kalani Sitake's group is the most battle-tested challenger to Texas Tech's throne, having reached last year's title game. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier returns with a year of experience running the offense, and BYU ranks among the national leaders in returning production. Some key returners are RB LJ Martin, S Faletau Satuala, and LB Isaiah Glasker. The Cougars are chasing their first conference championship since 2007.

3. Houston Cougars

Willie Fritz has quietly built one of the conference's steadiest programs, and after a 10-win season that went a little unnoticed, Houston is the trendy dark-horse pick to contend with Texas Tech and BYU

4. Utah Utes

A new era begins in Salt Lake City as Morgan Scalley takes over for longtime coach Kyle Whittingham. The Utes lose all 5 of their starting offensive lineman, but retain the 2025 Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year, QB Devon Dampier. The talent is still there, but replacing that much continuity is never seamless, and Utah slides slightly after taking a step back this spring.

5. TCU Horned Frogs

Sonny Dykes has TCU positioned to compete again. There's no doubt that they have the talent, but the Horned Frogs will need to prove themselves on the field after narrowly missing the AP Preseason Top 25

6. Arizona Wildcats

Star QB Noah Fifita will determine whether Arizona can turn a talented roster into results. Two of last year's losses came against top-five teams in this league, so the margin for error is thin.

7. Kansas State Wildcats

New coach Collin Klein takes over, hoping to jolt a program that has underperformed its talent level. Improvement is expected, but a full turnaround may take time.

8. Arizona State Sun Devils

The Sun Devils remain squarely in the mix. They lose star quarterback and the nation's highest-ranked transfer, Sam Leavitt, but return enough talented pieces to make noise in a wide-open conference

9. Oklahoma Sate Cowboys

Eric Morris takes over a Cowboys program that hit rock bottom, shedding 64 players to the transfer portal after going winless in Big 12 play for a second straight year. Among the Cowboys' top transfer additions are QB Drew Mestemaker, who led the nation in passing yards, plus standouts such as RB Caleb Hawkins and WR Wyatt Young.

10. Baylor Bears

Dave Aranda's seat remains warm, but four starters return from a defense that struggled last year, and the addition of Florida transfer quarterback DJ Lagway gives Baylor real upside if he reaches his ceiling.

11. UCF Knights

Heading into year two under Scott Frost, the Knights are still searching for the breakthrough season that establishes them as a consistent Big 12 threat.

12. West Virginia Mountaneers

Rich Rodriguez enters year two back in Morgantown with transfer quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. and running back Cam Cook providing a needed spark, positioning the Mountaineers to take a step forward.

13. Kansas Jayhawks

The return of offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki to run the offense under Lance Leipold is a major positive after back-to-back losing seasons, but a quarterback battle between Cole Ballard and Isaiah Marshall still needs to be settled, and a defense that allowed nearly 27 points per game must improve.

14. Cincinnati Bearcats

The Bearcats have the pieces to hover around .500 in conference play, with a shot at climbing higher if the offense finds consistency.

15. Colorado Buffalo

Colorado continues rebuilding, with the offensive line and defense determining just how far the Buffaloes can climb during the season.

16. Iowa State Cyclones

No program in the conference was hit harder this offseason. Iowa State lost coach Matt Campbell to Penn State, and he took much of the roster with him, including star quarterback Rocco Becht. The Cyclones lost roughly 55 players to the transfer portal. The ceiling is unknown, but the floor could be very low in year one.

If recent Big 12 history has taught us anything, these rankings will not stay intact for long. Texas Tech enters Week Zero as the team to beat, but BYU, Houston, Utah, TCU and the rest of a wide-open field will have plenty of opportunities to shake up the conference race. In the Big 12, the only safe preseason prediction may be that chaos is coming.
