Big 12 Men’s Basketball Penultimate Power Rankings: Houston Locked in No. 1.

Looking at where each team sits in the Big 12 Conference.

Disclaimer: The rankings below are for the games played through Saturday, March 2 Midweek games played since Saturday will be reflected on next week’s Power Rankings.

Here we are. We’ve reached the last week of the regular season and our penultimate Big 12 Men’s Basketball Power Rankings.

Mar 2, 2024; Norman, Oklahoma, USA; Houston Cougars guard Jamal Shead (1) and guard Emanuel Sharp (21) celebrate after Jamal scored a basket against the Oklahoma Sooners during the second half at Lloyd Noble Center.

The Houston Cougars are the unanimous No. 1 team in this week's Big 12 Men's Basketball Power Rankings.

Once again, the Power Rankings remained relatively steady over last week. Among our group of voters, Houston was once again unanimously voted as the top team in the league. However, that was the only unanimous vote this week. Yes, West Virginia is on the bottom, but almost half of our group voted for that honor to go to Oklahoma State. Even UCF, which has not budged from the No. 12 spot all season, got votes as high as No. 11 and as low as No. 14.

Any team can beat any other team on any given day. Big 12 men’s basketball is a gauntlet. Currently, five teams from the league are ranked, with several others receiving votes in at least one poll. That means chances are every game each week has at least one ranked team playing, and many times, both teams will be ranked.

Compared to last week’s Power Rankings, BYU had the biggest movement, jumping up two spots to No. 5. Six other teams moved up or down one spot – Baylor (+1), Kansas (-1), Oklahoma (-1), TCU (-1), Texas (+1), and Texas Tech (-1). All other teams remained in the same position they were in last week.

After the regular season has ended, and as the Big 12 Championship gets underway, we will have our final rankings next week.

How Power Rankings Are Determined

Once again, we have brought together a group from across the league to vote each week during the season on the Big 12 Power Rankings.

  • 25+ Total Participants
  • TCU FanNation (KillerFrogs) Editorial Staff
  • Not all are TCU homers – fans of teams in the SEC and Big Ten are part of our editorial staff.
  • One to two fans from the other current schools in the Big 12, plus one to two fans from the 2024 incoming “Four Corners” schools.
  • Each week, each participant provides their rankings 1-14. Those rankings are compiled, and the average rank is then listed below.

Here's where our panel of voters ranked the teams this week:

(Team records and AP Top 25 rank next to the team are as of 3/4/24. AP Top 25 rank of opponents is at the time the game was played; games since then were not considered when voters made their selection)
