Football: Week One Killer Frogs Player of the Week

TCU lost to Colorado on Saturday but that does not mean it was all bad for the Horned Frogs.

TCU's loss to Colorado left the world talking about the Sanders. Most of the chatter surrounded head coach Deion Sanders and starting quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Deion's son. But running back Trey Sanders (no relation) of the Horned Frogs quietly starred too.

Coming out of IMG Academy in 2019, Sanders was ranked the No. 1 running back in the country according to 247 Composite rankings, ahead of players like Zach Charbonnet and Breece Hall; names you may recognize from the NFL. Sanders' collegiate career started slowly thanks to an early ACL tear during his freshman year fall camp and injuries suffered in a car crash in 2020. Over three seasons in Tuscaloosa, Sanders rushed for 528 yards and three touchdowns.

In Saturday's season opener against Colorado, Sanders matched his career touchdown total, rushing for 46 yards and three touchdowns. He shared running back duties with Emani Bailey, who had an impressive game himself, running 14 times for 164 yards, 11.7 yards per carry. Sanders ran 15 times for just 3.1 yards per carry, but he was a workhorse in the red zone; he scored all three of his touchdowns inside of the 10-yard line.

As the Horned Frogs' season progresses, it will be interesting to watch Sanders and Bailey continue to split snaps. Sanders' talent is undeniable, but early misfortune has caused a bit of an underwhelming start to his career which ultimately led him to TCU. In his first game with his new team, he starred and reminded those who forgot that Trey Sanders can still play.
