Oklahoma Shreds TCU 69-45 in Season Finale

TCU's defense has now given up 60+ points in the final game for the second year in a row.

Spirits were high in the TCU locker room coming off a nice rivalry win over Baylor. Still, any momentum garnered from that game was lost, especially on the defensive end surrendering 62 points (excluding the pick-six) to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Plainly put, it was a horrendous showing from a defense that allowed 40+ for the third time this season. Dillon Gabriel had a tremendous game going 24/38 for 400 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. Drake Stoops had his way with the TCU secondary going for 12 catches, 125 yards, and a score. The Sooners only had to punt the ball once on their way to over 600 yards of total offense. This is the most points allowed by a TCU team since 2004.

When asked about a potential change at defensive coordinator, Sonny Dykes said, "I don't know. It's probably wrong time to ask me right now. I've got to sit down and evaluate everything."

However, the offense had a terrific showing with over 500 yards of offense and a high third-down efficiency. Josh Hoover threw for 344 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception. He has thrown for 300 yards or more in five of his six starts this season. As he's done all season long, Emani Bailey had another great game running for 150 yards and two total touchdowns.

It was also a career game for JoJo Earle who had four catches for 94 yards and a score. Hoover said he was proud of Earle and mentioned how selfless he was by making the switch to outside receiver.

TCU made it a close game late in the third quarter, but the Sooners always seemed to have a response. The second and fourth quarters were critical outscoring the Frogs 45-10.

A year removed from a national championship appearance, TCU was unable to make a bowl game. I don't think many people expected that repeated success in 2023, but this has certainly been a massive step backward. However, outside of a couple of games, the Frogs were in a lot of one-possession games. If even a couple of those go differently, we would have a different outlook on this season. There is still plenty to fix this offseason and questions around the coaching staff will certainly arise.
