TCU Men's Golf: Finish Runner-Up at Valero Texas Collegiate

The Frogs had a great opening tournament as they placed 2nd out of 12 teams.

TCU men's golf had a great opening tournament and first tournament with Bill Allcorn and Cole Buck coaching them. Gustav Frimodt led the charge earning first place in the tournament with a -6 tournament score. Frimodt fought back from a 1-over front nine to go on and shoot 1-under on the back for an even-par final round.

The final round score gave him enough to enter into a three-way playoff between Baylor’s Johnny Keefer and FGCU’s Joe Sullivan. Sullivan narrowed out Frimodt and Keefer, as he made birdie on the second playoff hole. This was enough to win the tournament and earn an exemption into the 2024 Valero Texas Open.

Brandon Massey shot 3-under in his final round, which tied a career-best round. It was definitely a moving day for Massey as he moved up 16 spots to tie for 19th place overall.

His fellow teammate Andrew Petruzzelli joined him in 19th place overall. The freshman finished his collegiate debut at even-par 72, which was closed out by back-to-back birdies on No. 17 and 18.

Other notable TCU performances were from Ethan Dial, who shot a 1-under final round to finish tied for 23rd place at 2-over and Jack Beauchamp, who finished the tournament tied for 31st place.

The Horned Frogs entered the final day with a one-stroke lead over the 12-team field. Even though they had their best round of the tournament at 4-under 284, they came up just short of the No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt, who was 12-under. This soared the Commodores to the top to claim the team title at 13-under. TCU finished five back at 8-under.

The Frogs looked very promising in the first tournament against some pretty big golf programs. Look for them to make some noise this season.

The Horned Frogs will be back on the tournament trail September 25-26 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

They will definitely look to keep the momentum going and have a great season.
