TCU Soccer: Frogs Come Away with a Hard-Fought Point Against No. 1 BYU

Seven Castain secures a brace in TCU's 3-3 draw in Provo

The Horned Frogs wrapped up their three-game road trip with a positive result after securing a draw in Provo, Utah against No. 1 BYU.

Opening their Big 12 Conference play, the Frogs found the back of the net after just two minutes thanks to Gracie Brian. AJ Hennessey defended from the front and regained possession before finding Brian in the penalty area for what was her third goal of the season and the 29th of her career.

After piling on the pressure the Frogs saw the fruits of their labor with a second goal courtesy of Seven Castain. The forward received a lofted ball over the top from Lauren Memoly, and spun away from the defender before calmly slotting it past BYU goalkeeper Savanna Mason.

Despite extending the lead to 2-0 after 27 minutes, the Cougars quickly halved the deficit after Rachel McCarthy headed home a goal from a set piece.

The Frogs headed into halftime up 2-1, but BYU wasn’t ready to lay down just yet. In the 54th minute, Allie Fryer netted the game-tying goal, her fifth goal of the season.

Just seven minutes later, Castain put the Frogs ahead yet again. This time it was a patient attack led by Camryn Lancaster. Playing it wide to Brian, she crossed the ball into the six yard box where Castain headed it past Mason, putting TCU ahead 3-2 with half an hour remaining.

Despite the Frogs efforts, BYU tied the game in the 78th minute courtesy of Erin Bailey, who scored her sixth goal of the season. Ultimately, it was a hard-fought, well-deserved point on the road against the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. While head coach Eric Bell would have loved to come away with all three points, TCU wrapped up their road trip on a high note.

Lauren Kellett was crucial in Thursday’s draw as she made a career high nine saves against the Cougars. Kellett, who has been at the heart of this team’s success on a defensive front, will look to continue on a tremendous season.

The Frogs will now make their way back to Fort Worth before hosting Stephen F. Austin on Sunday, September 17 at 1 p.m.
