ESPN Shares Their Honest Thoughts on Faizon Brandon Amid Tennessee Football QB Competition

Despite Josh Heupel's tendency to trust the veteran quarterback could go out the door if he chooses true freshman Faizon Brandon.

In this story:

The Tennessee Volunteers have had their fair share of recent developments, including from the quarterback room, as they continue to hold what seems to be an intense quarterback competition among three quarterbacks. The quarterbacks in the room include transfer addition Ryan Staub, redshirt-freshman George MacIntyre, and true freshman Faizon Brandon.

While little ground has been made when trying to determine a leader, it does seem that the true freshman could be the player who is standing out the most among all of the players in the competition.

Recently, an ESPN reporter shared his thoughts on 51 freshmen who are poised to make an impact on the 2026 college football season. As expected, Brandon was listed among the players and was even the No. 2 player to make the list in the SEC behind Vanderbilt quarterback Jared Curtis.

Here is what he had to say about Brandon and the quarterback battle.

Billy Tucker Gets Real When Talking About Faizon Brandon

"Brandon, the No. 14 prospect and third-ranked pocket passer in 2026, must first beat out redshirt freshman George MacIntyre for Tennessee's starting job, but his ceiling is significantly higher. His natural arm strength is a great fit for Josh Heupel's vertical offense and could unlock another gear for Tennessee," ESPN writer Billy Tucker shared recently when speaking about where the Vols quarterback stands in the competition.

The Tennessee Volunteers quarterback battle seems to be ongoing, as the Vols seem to be a bit removed from the announcement that will actually take place ahead of the first game, which is scheduled to be against Furman inside Neyland Stadium on Sep. 5.

What the Tennessee Vols Would Be Getting Out of Faizon Brandon

Brandon is known for many things, but if there is one thing that I would pinpoint as a determining factor of his success at the high school level is his ability to adapt. While he doesn't make many mistakes, the mistakes that he does make won't be made twice, as he can quickly correct himself thanks to adapting to the coaching he receives.

Brandon is also great when it comes to zipping a ball into a tight window. In my time covering quarterbacks, Brandon is the most accurate that I have watched in person. He is the exact type of accuracy that will remind fans of Hendon Hooker from 2022.

Brandon is also quick. He can extend plays rolling out of the pocket and will always have his eyes down the field.

In my opinion, if the Vols made a move to make Brandon their starter this season, they wouldn't be disappointed, although the same can be said about MacIntyre.
