Tennessee Basketball Focused on Offense, But Don't Worry About the Defense

Offense might have been the focus, but with Rick Barnes at the helm, the defense will still find a way

In this story:

For several years, Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Volunteers were heavily criticized for their offense. Though the team has had some offensive firepower, it has been far from their identity. Their offenses have largely been carried by one or two individual players for the past 3 years; those players include Dalton Knecht, Chaz Lanier, Ja’Kobi Gillespie, and Nate Ament.

These players were individually great, but the teams still seemed to lack firepower when they played other great teams. It often felt that if the opposing defense stopped the first option, then the offense would stall, leading to low-scoring games.

This upcoming season should end that trend. In fact, there is an argument that the Vols overcorrected and brought in too many scorers. They now have an elite level of offensive firepower, but lack defensive stars.

That leaves one big question: how the defense will look. I want to focus on the defense here since it appears many are now worried about how this side of the ball will play out.

Rick Barnes Has Perfected Defense

Some coaches are known for specific things, and Barnes has been known for his stifling defense. Barnes’s Tennessee teams have been elite by pretty much every definition of the word and by any way you want to define elite defense.

This is what Barnes does: he might have been slow to adapt to offensive basketball, but he perfected defensive basketball. His defensive knowledge will be even more important this season.

With all of the offense now on the roster, there are not nearly as many defensive players as in years past. This means the coaching staff will have their work cut out for them in two specific ways.

The Scheme

It sounds obvious that having elite defensive players makes playing defense easier, but often people only focus on the offensive production of players. For example, having Jahmai Mashack and Zakai Zeigler made creating a defensive scheme easier. They were both elite defensive players who could wreck a whole possession on their own.

This team will not have that luxury. This will require more team defense. It will be up to the coaching staff to create a game plan that maximizes each individual strengths. They will have to pick and choose their battles.

As I mentioned previously, Barnes has perfected defense. Few coaches in the country will be more prepared to generate a stop than Tennessee with Barnes at the helm.

The Development

Ultimately, the reason fans should not worry is that we have seen over the years that Barnes and his staff have an unbelievable ability to develop the defensive side of the ball. If you doubt this, I have a few distinct examples.

First, I implore you to look back at the 2023-2024 season. Focus on one player, Dalton Knecht. Knecht is rightfully known for his scoring for the Vols, but what often goes unmentioned is the strides he took defensively.

Early in the year, Knecht was a poor defender. In fact, he was benched at times for his defense early in the year. Over the course of the year, though, he was night and day different. He did not turn into a great defender, but he went from bad to serviceable, all while also improving on the offensive end as well. The staff took their best offensive weapon, kept his efficiency, and improved his defense. Do not sleep on how hard that truly is to do.

The second player I want to highlight is Nate Ament. Ament had an up-and-down season for the Vols, but one thing no one can deny is his development. This has been discussed heavily, but once again, watch the difference between the start of the year and the end.

Ament was noticeably more physical at the end of the year. Physicality went from his biggest weakness to something he was able to use to his advantage. He learned to use his size better and learned how to position his body.

Similarly to Knecht, Ament made these improvements while also improving his offensive game. There is reason to believe this season will add multiple new examples to this trend. Players with great offensive tools who continue being a star on offense while being able to be a difference-maker on defense.

No Trade-Offs

The coaching staff has learned to develop these offensive players in their weaknesses while still maximizing their strengths. There has not been a tradeoff. This team will have the offensive weapons to compete with anyone, and by the end of the year, they might also have the defense to match.
