Texas Longhorns Star Madison Booker Leads NCAA in This Crazy Stat

Just under two minutes into the Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team’s Elite Eight matchup against the Michigan Wolverines, junior forward Madison Booker ignited the crowd at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, with a mid-range jumper to give the Longhorns an early 4-2 lead.

Many from the crowd had likely seen Booker make similar shots a multitude of times this season, but for Longhorn fans, watching their star forward drill a mid-range shot under pressure never seems to get old.

Booker has now converted on 151 mid-range shots this season, leading Division I women’s basketball players in the category.

So far throughout the Longhorns’ ’ four NCAA Tournament matchups, Booker has accumulated 90 points, averaging 22.5 per game. She had a career-high 40-point game against the Oregon Ducks in the Round of 32, demonstrating what she is capable of with her team’s season on the line.

She has led her team in scoring all season, averaging 19.3 points per game, and as the statistic above revealed, she leads the NCAA in mid-range field goals. Those who have watched the forward have probably noticed her comfortability when it comes to mid-range shooting, and head coach Vic Schaefer has given her the go-ahead to “hunt” her shot because of her success.

Following her 40-point performance in the Sweet 16, she talked about the way in which she approaches the offensive side of her game.

“I think Coach Schaefer has really just pushed me into taking a big role– just being aggressive on the offensive end, finding my shot, hunting my shot,” she said. “That’s all he says in practice– hunt my shot.”

The mid-range jumper that many know her for is a shot she has mastered hunting down, and Texas will likely need her to continue hunting it down this weekend in Phoenix, Arizona.

For Booker and most of her teammates, playing in the Final Four is familiar territory. After being conquered in last year’s Final Four by the South Carolina Gamecocks, they return to the court with something to prove.

They are set to face the UCLA Bruins on Friday at the Mortgage Matchup Center, a team they have beat once already this season. A Final Four victory on Friday would mean a chance to play either the Gamecocks or Connecticut Huskies in the National Championship on Sunday.
