Longhorns Projected To Play USC Trojans in Alamo Bowl

The Texas Longhorns are 4-2 in six Alamo Bowl appearances since 2006.

Last season, the Texas Longhorns lost 27-20 to the Washington Huskies in the 2022 Valero Alamo Bowl.

Action Network's Brett McMurphy projects the Longhorns will play in the Alamo Bowl for the second-consecutive season, but this time against the USC Trojans in 2023.

McMurphy has set Texas as 6.5-point favorites for this hypothetical matchup in San Antonio, one that of course would draw headlines due to the historical rematch of two programs that played arguably the best football game of all time in the 2005 National Championship.

In last year's Alamo Bowl, the Longhorns dug themselves into a 27-10 hole as Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. tossed a pair of second-half touchdowns. Texas scored the final 10 points of the game, but it was too little, too late.

The Longhorns were without running back Bijan Robinson, who opted out of the Alamo Bowl not to risk injury and prepare for the NFL Draft, so the majority of the offensive load fell on the shoulders of quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Ewers set career highs for single-game completions and passing yards with 31 and 369, respectively. His lone touchdown pass of last year's contest came on a 34-yard connection with running back Jonathon Brooks.

It was just the second loss the Longhorns have suffered in six Alamo Bowl appearances, as Texas last 30-7 to Oregon in 2013. Its first appearance was against Iowa in a 26-24 win over the Hawkeyes in 2006.

If the Longhorns play USC in 2023, it would mark the third separate back-to-back Alamo Bowl appearance for Texas. It faced Oregon State and Oregon in 2012 and 2013, Utah and Colorado in 2019 and 2020 and the Huskies last season.
