Texas Longhorns RB Michael Terry III Continues to Impress at Fall Camp

The Texas Longhorns completely retooled their running back room this offseason with the additions of transfers Hollywood Smothers (NC State) and Raleek Brown (Arizona State), the arrival of elite freshman Derrek Cooper and the hiring of new running backs coach Jabbar Juluke.

However, one player has gotten lost in the shuffle despite arriving to Austin as a five-star recruit in the 2025 class.

Texas running back Michael Terry III, who started his college career off as a wide receiver, has become somewhat of a forgotten name in the backfield after a quiet freshman year last season, but he's continued to impress the coaching staff during fall camp in hopes of eventually earning some kind of role in the offense for the 2026 campaign.

During Texas' latest fall camp practice on Monday night, Terry found the end zone as the team went through the scrimmage portion.

Displaying his impressive frame and long strides, Terry showed why he can be a weapon in the Texas offense if eventually given the opportunity.

This short highlight helps echo some of what Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has said about Terry during fall camp.

"I thought Michael Terry showed up running the ball," Sarkisian said after Day 1 of fall camp.

Terry appeared in just two games as a freshman last season, recording one carry for no gain in the Citrus Bowl against Michigan.

Given the presence of Smothers, Brown and Cooper, Terry would likely only play a notable role this upcoming season if injuries occur ahead of him.

But the Longhorns have been hit with injuries at running back multiple times over the past two years. Terry will need to stay ready, and according to Sarkisian, he and the rest of the depth pieces in the backfield have shown massive improvement since last season.

"Michael Terry, James Simon, Ryan Niblett, l'm very encouraged by them to go along with the new faces that are here," Sarkisian said. "Knock on wood, where I've been sitting here, and it's right around this day where we lost two backs, bang, bang. And next thing you know, you're playing with guys who you weren't anticipating starting the season with. And so, we're developing all those guys, and we're pushing all those guys to be the best that they can become, and we're more comfortable today with that entire room than probably we've been in years past."
