Your UCLA Bruins improved their record in the new season to 2-0 with an impressive 35-10 victory over San Diego State last weekend. It was another sign that this team was taking a step forward, and it was great to see.

The Bruins entered the year wanting to improve on their success from a season ago, and now with a new, young quarterback under center, they are doing just that. While head coach Chip Kelly is still playing around with using multiple players under center, freshman Dante Moore has separated himself from the pack.

But the Bruins offense is clicking in a particularly special way. It’s scoring quickly on drives, making it tough for defenses to catch up.

“UCLA is making a habit of scoring in a hurry. Each of the Bruins’ first four touchdown drives against San Diego State was under 2:40, with three spanning 65 seconds or less. The success in getting to the end zone quickly is a big reason UCLA ranks last in the Pac-12 and No. 122 nationally in time of possession, holding the ball for an average of 25:08 per game.”

Per Ben Bolch of The Los Angeles Times

This has been a big reason why the Bruins offense has been so successful through the first two games of the season. Everyone on the offense understands their job, and they are executing it to near perfection right now.

There are still things to work on, and they will. But it seems that all is good in Bruinland right now. They aren’t the Oregon Ducks of the late 2000s and early 2010s with Kelly, but this offense is very good and it has Kelly in a good mood.

I don’t know anybody,” Kelly said, “that when you have a chance to make a big play is going to say, ‘We don’t want to make a big play because that puts our defense back on the field.’

If the Bruins keep playing this way, they could make some real noise this season. They have another chance to show what they can do this weekend as they welcome in North Carolina Central to the Rose Bowl.
