UCLA moved up to No. 18 in the AP Poll and No. 19 in the USA Today Coaches Poll last Sunday, marking their first appearance in either top 25. Utah, on the other hand, has been ranked all year, and is currently slotted in at No. 11 in both polls.

In the Pac-12 preseason media poll, UCLA was picked to finish in fourth, while Utah was picked to finish first for the second year in a row.

UCLA went 8-4 in 2021, and is now 23-25 in its four-plus years under coach Chip Kelly. The Bruins retained 58% of their production from last season, with quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, running back Zach Charbonnet, safety Stephan Blaylock and defensive end Bo Calvert highlighting the returning talent. Receiver Jake Bobo, edge rushers Gabriel and Grayson Murphy, linebacker Darius Muasau, defensive end Laiatu Latu and cornerback Azizi Hearn are among the team's top transfer portal additions.

Thompson-Robinson threw for 2,409 yards, 21 touchdowns and six interceptions on 62.2% completion last season, and he has 1,211 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception on 74.3% completion and a 171.4 passer rating so far in 2022. Charbonnet rushed for 1,137 yards last year, and he has rushed for 417 yards and four scores so far in 2022 to go along with 143 receiving yards in four appearances.

Bobo has emerged as the top option in the passing game, leading the way with 363 yards and three touchdowns on 21 catches. Latu ranks No. 2 in the country with 6.0 sacks so far this season, and he is just two weeks winning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

UCLA is averaging 41.4 points per game while allowing 20.8. The Bruins are picking up 293.2 yards per game through the air, plus another 213.2 on the ground.

In nonconference play, UCLA beat Bowling Green 45-17, Alabama State 45-7 and South Alabama 32-31. The Bruins beat Colorado 45-17 in their Pac-12 opener, and then they upset No. 18 Washington 40-32 at home.

Utah went 10-4 in 2021, shaking off some early season woes to make it to the Rose Bowl game for the first time in program history. The Utes retained 67% of their production from last season despite the coaching change, with quarterback Cameron Rising, running back Tavion Thomas and defensive back Clark Phillips III highlighting the returning talent.

Rising has asserted himself among the top quarterbacks in the Pac-12 since taking over in 2021, succeeding as a dual-threat option as well. The former Texas transfer has thrown for 1,153 yards and 13 touchdowns with two interceptions on 68.3% completion and a 166.0 passer rating. Rising has rushed for 189 yards and a touchdown, adding to Thomas' 295 yards and four scores.

Utah is scoring 42 points per game while allowing 14.4, both of which rank in the top 15 in the country. The Utes are picking up 250.2 yards per game through the air, plus another 203.4 on the ground.

In nonconference play, Utah lost to Florida 29-26 on the road, then turned around to beat Southern Utah 73-7 and San Diego State 35-7. Utah bested Arizona State 34-13 to open its Pac-12 slate, then stomped Colorado 42-16.

UCLA is 11-8 all-time against Utah, but has lost five in a row dating back to 2016. Coach Chip Kelly has yet to beat coach Kyle Whittingham since coming to Westwood, losing by an average score of 44.7 to 12.3.
