Enrolling to UNC as an initial walk-on, Maye wasn't sure he would receive a scholarship until Coach Williams surprised him. Maye's family history runs back to his parents, particularly his father, Mark. Mark Maye earned All-ACC honors as a UNC football quarterback in 1986-1987; His mother, Aimee, was a standout High School basketball player and UNC graduate. But the family dominance at Carolina doesn't stop there for the Maye's. Drake Maye is a four-star quarterback from Myers Park, who recently committed to North Carolina football.

During his four year tenure, the 2017 NCAA champion scored 857 points and 565 rebounds. Maye averaged 9.9 points, 1.6 assists, and 6.7 rebounds in 141 games played, starting in 74. Maye went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft but was signed by the Milwaukee Bucks summer league deal, but was waived in October of 2019. He soon signed to the Bucks G-League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, where he averaged 10.7 points and 7.3 rebounds. Due to injury, Maye was sidelined December to January.
