Virginia Lands Commitment From Clemson TE Transfer Sage Ennis

The Cavaliers pick up their 10th transfer commitment of the offseason and third in the last four days

The Clemson to Virginia football pipeline is active once again. The Cavaliers picked up their 10th transfer commitment of the offseason and third in the last four days, as former Clemson tight end Sage Ennis announced his commitment to Virginia on Monday afternoon. Ennis comes to UVA with one year of eligibility remaining.

Ennis was highly-recruited coming out of high school in Florida, boasting offers from 40 programs and ranking as the No. 18 tight end in the class of 2020. He ultimately committed to Clemson, where he has spent the last four seasons, including the 2020 and 2021 seasons with Tony Elliott as his offensive coordinator. Elliott was also Clemson's tight ends coach in 2021, his final season with the Tigers.

That prior relationship definitely helped reconnect Elliott and Ennis this offseason, as Ennis hit the transfer portal looking for a new home to play his final season of college football. Initially, however, Ennis elected to return to his home state of Florida in 2024, originally committing to Florida A&M. But when Florida A&M's head coach Willie Simmons suddenly resigned to go take a job as the running backs coach at Duke, Ennis began to reconsider his options.

It was then that Elliott invited Ennis to come take a visit at Virginia. And after that visit, Ennis decommitted from Florida A&M on Sunday night and announced his commitment to UVA the next day.

A 6'4", 240-pound tight end from Graceville, Florida, Ennis played in 41 games over the last four seasons at Clemson, logging six receptions for 77 yards in his career. He played 449 offensive snaps in those 41 games.

Ennis is the second tight end transfer the Cavaliers have brought in this offseason, joining Harvard tight end Tyler Neville. He is also the third transfer Virginia has picked up in the last four days, with New Mexico State quarterback Gavin Frakes and Robert Morris defensive back Jermarian Jackson pledging to the Cavaliers over the weekend.

This is certainly not the first time Tony Elliott has taken advantage of his Clemson connections, having brought over defensive back Malcolm Greene and running back Kobe Pace from the Tigers last year.

Sage Ennis is the 10th transfer to commit to Virginia this offseason, joining Notre Dame wide receiver Chris Tyree, Akron linebacker Corey Thomas Jr., Harvard tight end Tyler Neville, Penn defensive back Kendren Smith, UCF offensive lineman Drake Metcalf, North Carolina wide receiver Andre Greene Jr., Kent State wide receiver Trell Harris, New Mexico State quarterback Gavin Frakes, and Robert Morris defensive back Jermarian Jackson
