Damian Lillard Calls Out Officiating in West Virginia-Iowa Game

NBA superstar Damian Lillard believes WVU didn't get a fair whistle.

The West Virginia women's basketball team nearly pulled off the upset of the year in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but were robbed of that opportunity against No. 1 seed Iowa.

The Mountaineers played a tough, gritty game for 40 minutes and every time it felt like the Hawkeyes were going to pull away, Mark Kellogg's squad battled and fought their way back into it.

Unfortunately, the officiating became the storyline of the night as West Virginia was called for 27 fouls compared to Iowa's 11. The free throw disparity is hard to turn a blind eye to, considering Iowa had 30 attempts to West Virginia's five. When you look at the rest of the stat sheet, it looked like a pretty even matchup and in some areas, even favored the Mountaineers.

National writers, beat writers for other schools, and even coaches noticed how much the whistle favored Iowa. Not to mention, Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard even chimed in on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"I feel like West Virginia women’s team getting did bad by these refs," Lillard posted.

It's a heartbreaking way for a season to come to an end, but that doesn't takeaway from the incredible season the ladies had in their first year under new head coach Mark Kellogg.
