BREAKING: WVU Set to Hire Darian DeVries as Head Basketball Coach

The Mountaineers have found their next leader.

MORGANTOWN, WV - After nearly a year of gathering information and closely following some of college basketball's best up-and-coming coaches, West Virginia University Director of Athletics Wren Baker has his guy. On Sunday evening, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that Drake's Darian DeVries is set to become the next men's head basketball coach at WVU. The two sides have agree to a five-year deal.

DeVries has compiled a career record of 150-55 (.732) with three conference championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances. During his six-year stint, he led the Bulldogs to 20+ wins every year, marking the first time in program history where they've recorded at least 20 wins in a five-year span. In 2021, he helped end the Bulldogs' NCAA Tournament drought with their first win in the big dance in 50 years, taking down Wichita State in the First Four.

DeVries led the Bulldogs back to the tournament this year thanks to a 28-7 record and winning the Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship, securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Drake earned a No. 10 seed and nearly pulled off the upset of No. 7 Washington State in the Round of 64, but ultimately fell 66-61.

The Aplington, Iowa native played his college ball at Northern Iowa from 1994-98 before entering the coaching space in 2001. He joined Dana Altman's staff at Creighton and remained with the Jays when Greg McDermott took over as head coach in 2010.
