Rolando Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) will defend his WBA welterweight championship against Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13 KO) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout marks Romero's first fight since May 2, 2025, when he won a unanimous decision over Ryan Garcia to win the WBA crown. Lopez is looking to move past a loss he suffered to Shakur Stevenson in January 2026.

Additionally, the winner of the fight will greatly improve their negotiating power in future fights. With streaming deals and territorial promotion, each fighter has struggled to land a high-level opponent. Now, they face each other. Romero and Lopez are close friends, a bond forged through adversity and competition, with each praising the other ahead of their brawl.

Romero is the underdog in this welterweight title battle. However, that doesn't mean that he will enter the ring as an underpowered fighter, as he has knockout power in both hands and a chaotic fighting style that keeps opponents guessing. Plus, the angles of Romero's punches are not traditional, as opponents tend to assume and usually end up paying for it. Most importantly, Romero's sturdy frame will absorb the weaker punches.

Without a doubt, Romero needs the fight to turn into a close-quarters brawl, a slugfest filled with exchanges. However, Romero cannot become lazy and forget his fundamentals. For instance, he should focus on tightening his guard, parrying punches, and deflecting blows as he engages in the action.

In contrast, Lopez uses speed, spatial awareness, technique, and sound counterpunching to win rounds. Plus, if an opponent lingers too long, the challenger can use sharper footwork, dip in and out of trouble, never placing himself in harm's way, staying ahead of the brawl, and circling in and out. His primary objective in the fight is to avoid trading punches. Romero is a power puncher, and Lopez doesn't need to try that tactic.

Prediction

With Romero's ability to end the fight in the blink of an eye, you cannot readily dismiss anything he may attempt in the fight. If Lopez gets pinned on the ropes or has the ring cut off, Romero slides in to win the round. Lopez has never been stopped, but the champion possesses enough power to stop the proceedings.

Lopez must bait Romero with slight feints, goading him to unfurl wide punches. The challenger's skill in landing quick punches while evading danger will ultimately secure his victory in the fight. On balance, Lopez knows that Romero wants to wage a war of attrition. Instead, he will allow Romero to fight downhill on his terms.

The old friends will battle, with the challenger, defeating the champion.

Prediction: Lopez by decision.
