Despite the hyperphysical nature of the action, boxing remains a sport where crossover spectacles supersede divides. While championships are an integral part of the sport, true retirements rarely seem to last unless injury is the cause.

Fans appear increasingly willing to see their favorite past-their-prime legends step into the ring. Additionally, the sport has become a haven for circus events featuring streamers, crossover athletes, and various influencers.

Social media drives boxing to an extent. The ability to publicly negotiate a fight and capture the fleeting attention spans of fans has become a key currency in boxing. No matter how unrealistic a proposed match may seem, there will always be funds available to bring it to fruition.

With a 21-year age difference, Floyd Mayweather should never cross paths in the squared circle with Ryan Garcia. However, as mentioned, spectacles make money. And, as many have said before, boxing is a prizefight business, regardless of opponents.

Still, Garcia, if he is to actually fight the undefeated legend, has the type of stipulation that can either make this fight an unforgettable moment or chip away at a legacy.

Garcia's Mayweather fight stipulation

If the proposed bout does take place, the current WBC welterweight champion wants the fight to count in the record books. Mayweather offered an exhibition bout, but Garcia wants the record books to actually reflect the result.

"Okay Floyd let’s see how much you love that “0”," Garcia tweeted.

Mayweather has built much of his reputation on his undefeated record. As a result, losing the fight wouldn't wreck his legacy but would cast a long shadow over it, especially since questions have dogged Mayweather throughout his career.

If you look at his resume, Mayweather fought some of the sport's elite. However, they fall into one of two categories. Either the opponents were removed from their respective primes, looking for a big payday, like Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Oscar De La Hoya, or they were fighters who were just about to enter their prime, like Canelo Alvarez. Many called Mayweather a convenient matchmaker.

A fight against Garcia, a fighter in his prime with knockout power, poses a new threat to Mayweather. He cannot throw his celebrity in and hope the champion takes it easy. Instead, Garcia would want to end the fight as quickly as possible.

The fight could happen if Mayweather agrees to Garcia's terms. Mayweather's financial situation seems precarious, and the mere suggestion of this fight suggests that the legendary boxer may be looking for a cash infusion. Historically, this has often been the motivation behind many fighters returning to the ring.

Additionally, if Mayweather agrees, the co-main event of the Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua fight would make it one of the most lucrative fights of all time.

It raises an important question: Will Mayweather choose to prioritize the financial benefits over maintaining the integrity of his undefeated record?
