Georgia star tight end Brock Bowers will have tightrope surgery to repair an ankle injury he sustained during Saturday's game against Vanderbilt, the school said.

Bowers will miss four to six weeks of playing time as a result of the recovery, though Georgia added it's expected that he will make a full recovery. While the Bulldogs are off this week, they resume the schedule against rival Florida on Oct. 28.

Georgia plays at home against Missouri and Ole Miss, both of which are ranked this week, after that, before going on the road against a ranked Tennessee team on Nov. 18, and closing at Georgia Tech.

Bowers landed awkwardly on an end-around run play against Vandy, and had a noticeable limp moments after the play ended.

Moments later, Bowers went down onto the field and received medical attention from Georgia's trainers, who assisted him to the locker room for further evaluation.

Regarded as the premier tight end in college football and a projected first-round NFL Draft next year, Bowers leads Georgia with 37 receptions for 545 yards and four receiving touchdowns so far this season. He averages 14.7 yards per reception.

Not having Bowers in the rotation may have an undue effect on Georgia's ability to move the ball in the air, as his presence has helped attract multiple defenders and can open up throwing lanes for the team's other receivers.

In his absence, the Bulldogs will rely more on targets like Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, who is 2nd on the team in receiving, and Dominic Lovett, the transfer who ranks 3rd with 333 yards. Bowers represented 22 percent of Georgia's receptions, 29 percent of its touchdown catches, and 24 percent of its receiving yards.

He also has one rushing touchdown on 7 attempts.

Bowers caught 4 passes for 22 yards in Saturday's game prior to the injury.
