National Championship Winning Coach Poised for College Football Return After Firing

One of college football’s most recognizable, highly paid, and recently unemployed head coaches has been off the sidelines for a couple years, and now he wants back in.

Jimbo Fisher, the veteran coach who delivered Florida State a national championship in 2013, is trying to position himself for a return to the college football sidelines three years off from his dismissal from Texas A&M.

Jimbo wants back in

“A number of active coaches and other figures in the college athletics landscape” have confirmed Fisher’s desire to get back in the game, according to USA Today.

Fisher was briefly named during last offseason’s coaching carousel, actively working to enter consideration for the then-vacant Auburn position, and he apparently remains very open to opportunities where he can prove himself again.

Salary isn’t a big issue

Money is not expected to be a barrier for Fisher, one of college football’s most fabulously compensated coaching figures historically, with people around him apparently saying that salary would not prohibit a deal for someone focused on reclaiming his place in the game.

Fisher’s relationship with Texas A&M ended unceremoniously in November 2023 after a meager 6-4 start to that season, with the school owing him a record buyout of over $77 million, the biggest payoff in college football history at the time.

He built a winner at FSU

Before going 45-25 with the Aggies program, Fisher built a formidable outfit at Florida State, compiling an 83-23 record while winning three straight ACC championships and a BCS national title off a 14-0 run that saw quarterback Jameis Winston win the Heisman.

Fisher has been involved in the game

Since leaving the sideline, Fisher has stayed connected to the sport, joining the ACC Network as an analyst and appearing on the channel’s pregame shows.

Earlier this year, he spent time with new Memphis head coach Charles Huff, offering some advice during spring practices and working with the Tigers’ offense, moves that clearly reflect a coach who has not stepped away from the game completely.

He misses the action

Fisher has made clear that he craves the daily grind: “The relationship with players. The competition. I miss the competition. I miss recruiting,” he told The Athletic.

College football’s coaching carousel routinely produces a number of openings every fall and winter, and with expectations rising and resources flowing in the NIL era, programs will once again be seeking out coaches with proven experience, and Fisher could fit that bill.

Whether a suitable vacancy materializes in this cycle remains an open question. What is clear is that a national title-winning coach with years of high-level experience is prepared to take a chance if the right opportunity arises.
