College Football Powerhouse Remains Outside Top 30 in ESPN’s Updated Recruiting Rankings

This SEC program's ranking hasn't budged in consecutive weeks due to a light haul of commitments with most of the Class of 2027's best players already locked in elsewhere

Alabama is one of the biggest brands in college football. So it's surprising to see the Crimson Tide sitting at No. 32 in ESPN's updated 2027 recruiting rankings and delivering so little improvement to that number this summer.

The 2026 season is almost here, and yet most of the 2027 recruiting cycle is already settled. In Rivals' Class of 2027 top 100, every single player is already committed. So Alabama's ranking isn't likely to move much before the early signing period begins on Dec. 2.

Why Alabama sits at No. 32 in ESPN's 2027 rankings

The main reason for the underwhelming recruiting class is size, or lack thereof. Alabama has just three players in the SC Next 300, ESPN's list of the top prospects in the class, and just 14 commitments in total. Most programs double that figure in an average year.

247Sports ranks the class 42nd nationally. On3 has it 33rd and 13th in the SEC. That last number stands out the most because Alabama is used to being at the top of its league, not sitting in the bottom half of it.

The Tide's 2026 class ranked sixth nationally and second in the conference. That finish outside the top five was a first since 2008, according to Rivals.

Alabama also kept things modest via the transfer portal, adding just 17 players this cycle. That's light work compared to some other programs like Colorado's 43 additions or Louisville's 34. Programs with new head coaches tend to go even higher like Lane Kiffin adding 41 players in the portal, or Eric Morris at Oklahoma State, who brought in 55 players.

The class does have real talent at the top, though. It just does not have much depth yet. Kalen DeBoer and his staff have landed quality names, but not the volume that pushes a class into the top 10. That gap between quality and quantity is what the ranking reflects.

Elijah Haven, Trent Seaborn give Alabama two quarterbacks

The most interesting part of the class is at quarterback. Alabama holds commitments from two of them. Five-star Elijah Haven, out of Dunham School in Baton Rouge, is the crown jewel. He committed in late April and grades as one of the top overall prospects in the country.

ESPN calls him the top quarterback in the 2027 class, and Rivals has him second at the position behind Nebraska commit Trae Taylor.

But Haven is not the only passer in the group. Four-star Trent Seaborn, from Thompson in Alabaster, Alabama, was DeBoer's first commitment in the class back in October. Now Alabama has two quarterbacks pledged, and only one can be the future starter.

Seaborn's spot is worth watching. ESPN reported earlier this year that Oregon has stayed in close contact with him.

Osani Gayles and a loaded backfield round out the class

Whoever ends up throwing the ball will have weapons. Four-star receiver Osani Gayles, out of IMG Academy, is a top-10 wideout in the class. He wins in one-on-one matchups and brings quick burst at 5-11, 185 pounds.

Alabama also complemented its backfield. Four-star running backs Tai Phillips and Nigel Newkirk both picked the Tide.

Newkirk is a slashing runner with good balance who ran for more than 1,400 yards as a sophomore. Phillips brings straight-line speed and has been clocked at nearly 22 mph in game play.

The cycle is not over, and a few late additions could still lift this class. But for now, one of the sport's true powers is watching from outside the top 30, and that is not a place the Crimson Tide are used to standing.
