Seattle Mariners Calling Up Exciting Top Prospect in Wake of Injury Issues

Outfielder Dominic Canzone is headed to the injured list for the Seattle Mariners, so the team is responding by bringing up top prospect Jonatan Clase, who was playing in the Futures Game just last year.

Yes, it's only 16 games in but the Seattle Mariners are having a tough go of it.

Seattle, who came into the season with the playoff expectations, has started 6-10 and just lost a one-run game to the Chicago Cubs in which they squandered back-to-back innings of runners at first and second with nobody out - and then got picked off at first base to end the game.

Seattle also is now dealing with injury issues as outfielder Dominic Canzone is going to the injured list with a shoulder injury suffered in Sunday's loss.

As a result, the team is turning to one of its top prospects and promoting outfielder Jonatan Clase from Triple-A.

Per Kiley McDaniel of ESPN:

The Mariners are calling up OF Jonatan Clase, per source. He’s a plus-plus runner with an OPS over 1.000 in Triple-A so far this season.

It's an aggressive push for Clase, who is just 21 years old and has played only 12 games in Triple-A lifetime.

Here's a portion of his MLB.com prospect profile, where he slots in as the 10th-best prospect in the organization:

Speed will always be Clase’s calling card, and coupling those wheels with improved route running should allow him to play center field in the Majors on days where Julio Rodriguez needs a break. His floor over the next 18-24 months might be in the neighborhood of Taylor Trammell, who hasn’t yet established himself in the Majors but has shown flashes. And his ceiling would be an everyday player who might give up a little in the batting average department but makes up for it by drawing walks and running into some power while playing good defense.

The Mariners take on the Reds on Monday night with first pitch coming at 9:42 p.m. ET.
