When Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story underwent elbow surgery this offseason, the fear was that he was out for most or all of the season. Even the most optimistic views had him out until at last the All-Star break.

But, as the calendar moves to late April, the picture is getting more optimistic. It now seems likely that Story will be back this season. We still don't have an exact timeline but Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom provided a good update on the Red Sox pregame show on NESN on Tuesday. You can watch his comments in full below.

"I don't think we were pessimistic. I know I said "we're not banking on him' and that was honest, but it really just, you have to let the timetable take shape and we didn't want to put anything on him that we didn't know about...Him coming back later this season in his mind is something he always intended on doing and certainly in reach but, we're just taking it step by step."

Story was signed to a six-year, $140 million contract before the 2022 season started. He played just 94 games for the Red Sox last year after dealing with other injuries. He hit .238 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs.

Story, 30, spent the first six years of his career with the Colorado Rockies. He is a two-time all-star who has received MVP votes in three different seasons.

The Red Sox have been utilizing Enrique Hernandez and Yu Chang at shortstop in his absence.
