The Boston Red Sox, already reeling after having lost their last three series, have received even worse news on Friday.

Before the Sox open up a series with the New York Yankees on Friday night, the team made a number of roster moves, including placing Chris Sale on the 60-day injured list.

He had been put on the injured list last week with "left shoulder inflammation," but this timeline means he'll be out until at least August.

The following comes on Twitter from Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald.

Red Sox make a slew of roster moves:

OF Adam Duvall reinstated from IL

LHP Joe Jacques selected to major league roster

Chris Sale to 60-day IL

Enmanuel Valdez optioned to Triple-A

Matt Dermody DFA

We chronicled the Duvall and Dermody moves here, so you can catch up there. The big news here is on Sale, who continues to get bad news on his health.

He's dealt with significant injuries of the last five seasons now. He was shut down at the end of 2019 with elbow problems, missed all of 2020 and most of 2021 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and then dealt with illness, a finger issue and a broken wrist that cost him nearly all of 2022.

He had looked strong this year and was becoming the ace that the Red Sox needed him to be.

He is 5-2 with a 4.58 ERA. He's struck out 71 batters in 59 innings.

For his career, he's a seven-time All-Star selection who helped the Red Sox win the 2018 World Series.

The Red Sox will take on the Yankees on Friday at 7:05 p.m. ET.
