The Boston Red Sox have designated starting pitcher Matt Dermody for assignment and are bringing back injured outfielder Adam Duvall ahead of Friday's game against the New York Yankees.

Dermody pitched for the Red Sox on Thursday against the Cleveland Guardians, going four innings and giving up three earned runs. The Red Sox lost the game, 10-3.

His activation on Thursday had caused some controversy as a past tweet was uncovered in which he expressed some homophobic views.

You can read more about that story here. After the game, he spoke about the tweet with Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe.

Dermody postgame: “I do regret the tweet in the sense that it came out hurtful and it hurt a lot of people. That’s the last thing I want to do is hurt people. A lot of people think that I’m against a certain group of people or whatnot. But I’m for everybody making it to heaven."

The Red Sox have seven days to trade him, release him, or outright him to the minors. If the organization wants to keep him, it's likely he'll pass through waivers and could end up back in Triple-A.

As for Duvall, he's been out since early April with a wrist fracture. His presence will help a Sox lineup that has had a hard time scoring runs lately. Before going on the injured list, he was hitting .455 through 33 at-bats. He also had four home runs and had already posted 14 RBI.

The Red Sox play the Yankees on Friday at 7:05 p.m. ET.
