The Boston Red Sox have shut down speedy infielder Aldaberto Mondesi with discomfort in his surgically repaired left knee.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Mondesi (knee) has been shut down again, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

ANALYSIS
Mondesi resumed baseball activities at the beginning of August and had recently advanced to facing live pitching, but his surgically-repaired left knee is apparently barking again. The 28-year-old speedster hasn't appeared in a game at any level this season, and time is running out for him to do so in 2023.

It's a disappointment for Mondesi, who barely played in 2022 because of the injury, and is now facing the possibility of missing nearly two full seasons.

One of the fastest players in baseball, Mondesi is still just 28 years old. He stole 43 bases in 2019 and led baseball in steals during the pandemic season with 24. He was supposed to be able to give the Red Sox some speed in the wake of Xander Bogaerts' departure in free agency but it just hasn't happened.

Because of injuries to him and Trevor Story this season, the Sox have struggled to find consistency in the middle infield. They've utilized Enrique Hernandez, Yu Chang, David Hamilton, Christian Arroyo, Pablo Reyes and Story in the middle infield this season. They also traded for Luis Urias at the trade deadline.

Story is now back, working to solidify shortstop.

The Red Sox enter play on Wednesday at 1.0 game back in the American League wild card race.

Mondesi is a lifetime .244 hitter.
