Boston Red Sox Manager Alex Cora Discusses Rehab Plan For Infielder Trevor Story

Earlier on Tuesday, it was reported that Boston Red Sox infielder Trevor Story was "likely" to begin a rehab assignment this week.

Now, we know that Story will begin his rehab assignment on Friday night as he works his way back from an internal brace procedure this offseason.

Before the Red Sox played the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night, manager Alex Cora discussed the plan with NESN:

"He's going to play short on Friday, DH on Saturday, short on Sunday. He'll go five innings, DH for whatever at-bats he gets, and then five innings again on Sunday. It's going to be important."

Cora also discussed the next steps in Story's rehab:

"The next thing they're going to try do is roll balls and he'll dive for it and get up and throw to first base, but physically he feels good..."

It will be interesting to see how everything comes together when Story comes back. First off, the Red Sox signed Story to a six-year contract before the 2022 season: He has to play and has to be afforded time to work through an adjustment period. At the same time, the Sox are looking to make the playoffs and can ill-afford to play someone who could encounter struggles as he re-integrates into the lineup.

He hit .238 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs last year for the Red Sox. He played in just 94 games a season ago with unrelated injuries.

The 30-year-old is a two-time All-Star who has received MVP votes in three different seasons. He's a lifetime .268 hitter with 174 home runs. He had played with the Colorado Rockies before signing in Boston.

The Red Sox enter play on Tuesday at just 1.5 games back in the American League wild card race.
