Chicago White Sox Starter Beginning Another Rehab Assignment

The Chicago White Sox are sending third baseman Yoan Moncada out on a rehab assignment.

Moncada has dealt with back problems all season and has been on the injured list twice, so hopefully he's able to stay healthy this time around.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Moncada (back) is beginning his rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Charlotte, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

ANALYSIS
Jake Burger, who has been playing third base with Moncada on the shelf, has had the better overall season, but Burger is hitting .176 with three home runs and a 32 percent strikeout rate over his last 20 games. Given how much Moncada struggled (78 wRC+, 0.18 BB/K) before the injury, the club may opt to give him a longer rehab assignment than usual to see if he can get into a rhythm at the plate.

The injuries have been a major storyline of the last few years for the 28-year-old, who was once the best prospect in baseball. He's hitting just .232 with a .279 on-base percentage this season. He's played in just 38 games after playing in just 104 a year ago.

The White Sox are currently 38-54 and in fourth place in the American League Central. They are 8.0 games back in the division and will see if they can get back into the playoff race over the next two weeks.

If they can't, the team could undergo a massive sell-off and another rebuild.

They'll open up the second half of the season on Friday against the Atlanta Braves.
