As the Cincinnati Reds mount one final playoff push this week, they've gotten awful news on Rookie of the Year candidate Matt McLain.

Per Charlie Goldsmith on social media:

Matt McLain re-aggrevated his oblique (grade two strain) on his rehab assignment. He’s out for the regular season.

McLain tried to push through it on his rehab assignment, but he was in a lot of pain.

That's devastating news for him, and the Reds, who enter play on Tuesday at 2.5 games back in the chase for the third and final wild card spot in the National League. McLain was supposed to be activated Tuesday, but that clearly isn't happening.

The 24-year-old former first-round pick hit .290 this year with 16 home runs, 50 RBI and 14 stolen bases. He posted a .357 on-base percentage and is one of many Reds' rookies to debut this year, including Elly De La Cruz, Andrew Abbott, Brandon Williamson, Spencer Steer and Christian Encarnacion-Strand.

Regardless of what happens the rest of the week for the Reds, the year has been a success. It's re-invigorated the fanbase and has fans excited for the future.

The Reds are a starting a two-game series with the in-state rival Cleveland Guardians. First pitch on Tuesday night is set for 6:10 p.m. ET as Reds' flamethrower Hunter Greene battles with the well-traveled Lucas Giolito.

Greene, who spent a while on the injured list this year, is 4-6 with a 4.24 ERA while Giolito is 8-14 with a 4.60 ERA with the White Sox, Angels and Guardians.
