Young Cincinnati Reds Starter Suffers Awful Setback in Injury Recovery, Season Now in Question

The Cincinnati Reds may not get back Nick Lodolo this season after he suffered another setback with his left tibia.

As the Cincinnati Reds chase their first playoff berth since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, they got terrible news on starting pitcher Nick Lodolo, who has suffered a setback in his rehab.

Per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com:

Lodolo had a setback in his last rehab start at Louisville. MRI revealed another stress reaction in his left tibia. He’s going for a second opinion, Bell said.

Depending on the results of that MRI, Lodolo's season could be over, which would be a devastating blow for the 25-year-old.

Lodolo threw 2.1 innings in his last rehab start on Sunday and was thought to be close to re-joining the team, which was exciting given that young hurler Hunter Greene was also recently activated from the injured list.

Lodolo is one of the best arms in the Reds system, though he is just 2-1 this year with a 6.29 ERA in 34.1 innings. He's only made seven starts this season. He made his debut in the 2022 season, throwing 103.1 innings and striking out 131 batters.

Cincinnati enters play on Tuesday at 64-61 on the season. They are in third place in the National League Central and trail in the National League wild card race by 1.0 game.

They will take on the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night in Anaheim. First pitch is set for 9:38 p.m. ET.

Graham Ashcraft pitches for the Reds against Lucas Giolito.

Ashcraft is 6-8 with a 4.89 ERA while Giolito is 7-9 with a 4.44 ERA. He was acquired at the trade deadline from the White Sox.
