The Detroit Tigers are having a terrible time with injuries this season, specifically to the starting rotation.

The team has seen Matt Manning, Alex Faedo, Eduardo Rodriguez, Tarik Skubal and Spencer Turnbull all miss time this season, and now, they can add another to that list in the form of lefty Matthew Boyd.

Boyd left his start on Monday early with elbow issues and it's reported that he will need Tommy John surgery. That will keep him out the rest of this year and most or all of next year.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

The Tigers placed Boyd on the 60-day injured list Tuesday, and he will require Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

ANALYSIS
Boyd was pulled from his start Monday against Texas with left elbow discomfort, and now he'll be forced to miss the rest of the season and most of 2024. He finishes the season with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 73:25 K:BB through 71 innings. Anthony Misiewicz was promoted in a corresponding move.

He had signed a one-year deal this past offseason so this injury means he severely hurt his future earning potential as well. He could spend the entire year next year as a free agent and try to latch onto a team in 2025 or maybe a team signs him to a two-year deal and lets him rehab all of the first year.

For his career, he's 44-67 with a 4.94 ERA. He's started 160 career games and has played for the Tigers and Mariners.

The news is extra somber because the Tigers finally began to get good news on the rest of their pitching staff's health, but as just as quickly as they got good news, this bad news was reported.
